I first saw this film when it came out a decade or more ago and loved it. His sons wife was pregnant with twins, a boy and girl, and then he firmly believed the grandson would be the leader. Great film, and much enjoyed by my NZ-loving Mum. The girl, Pai (Koro is the chief of these people. The DVD version is not of the best quality and this disc gives the film the quality it deserves. However, some scenes may upset young children. If you are now thinking it would have to take an extraordinary child actor to pull this off, you’d be right. I watched this after I had spent some time in NZ (New Zealand) and it brought back some amazing memories .... see and weep! Some of it may upset young children. The surviving girl is named Pai. Superb Blu Ray version of Niki Caro's engrossing film. I recite these facts right at the top of this review because I fear you might make a hasty judgment that you don't want to see a movie about a 12-year-old Maori girl who dreams of becoming the chief of her people. There is a proud Maori man who is descended from chiefs, who believes his people are in decline and need a new leader to rescue them. The time is now. There is a scene set at a school ceremony, where Pai has composed a work in honor of her people and asked her grandfather to attend. He causes Pai much hurt by doubting her, questioning her achievements, insisting in the face of everything she achieves that she is only a girl.Pai is played by Keisha Castle-Hughes, a newcomer of whom it can only be said: This is a movie star. She stands up to her grandfather in painful scenes, she finds dignity, and yet the next second she's running around the village like the kid she is. never seen this before, loved it. Whale Rider ist ein deutsch-neuseeländischer Film von Niki Caro aus dem Jahr 2002. A classic Antipodean tale (NZ). It takes a series of startling events and adventures before the village elder, her grandfather, finally realises that she really is the reincarnation of the first Maori, the "whale rider" of the title. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, but this disc omitted the most crucial part of the movie. If you’ve ever felt discriminated against because of your gender, this is the book for you.

Pai believes that she could serve as the chief, but her grandfather, despite his love, fiercely opposes this idea. Pai bring the whales back to life was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, and her grandfather asked for her forgiveness and declaring her as a leader. Soon Koro warmed up to Pai by dropping her off and picking her up every day from school on his bike. I really felt for Kahu (or Pai) especially, and now I will look up to her as a favoured character.
