Make them fast short range weapons.There was a reason crossbows were illegal for commoners to own throughout most of Europe.Crossbows never had longer range than bows, their benefit was that you could keep them pre loaded and fire them with a trigger. Crossbows are supposed to be slow, very long range weapons that pack one helluva punch.
